The American Concrete Pavement Association (ACPA) recognized the U.S. Route 11/15
widening project as nations best rural state highway project in
2002. This highway is an important link in the Pennsylvania
transportation network, connecting Harrisburg with Williamsport, the
northern tier counties and central New York
State. The project included work beginning at Mount Partick south of
the intersection with S.R. 34 and extending north 17 miles past the
intersection with S.R. 104.while
widening this 10-mile-long section of highway from three lanes to five
This award recognizes the project team for coordination and
innovations allowing the contractor to earn a $300,700 incentive bonus for pavement smoothness.
The most important element in producing smooth pavement is to provide a constant head of concrete
in front of the paver. This is accomplished by providing an
uninterrupted flow of concrete to
a paver running at constant speed. The contractor
minimized disruptions to the flow of concrete by setting up an onsite batch plant.
Trucks delivered concrete to a belt placer which fed a CMI spreader operating at
constant speed.
Iafrate also developed a method to produce more uniform joint openings and less penetration of
concrete into the base course. The Federal Highway Administration and PennDOT
have adopted this job as a research project on the technique.
Construction of the widened route 11/15 was completed and open to traffic on
Month?, xx, 2001. This project has resulted in increased driving comfort, congestion relief,
and improved safety along the corridor.
